The Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) is the youngest faculty of CTU in Prague. It was established by the decision of the Academic Senate of CTU on April 22, 2009 and will start its operation on July 1, 2009. The project of establishing the new faculty started in March 2008.

The mission of FIT is to build a modern research faculty of informatics comparable with leading European faculties and schools of informatics. FIT is a new faculty, but it will not start from scratch. The nucleus of its academic staff is formed by about 60 members of the current Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DCSE) of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of CTU. DCSE is celebrating 45 year anniversary in 2009 and was the first department of computing in the Czech Republic. The experience and skills of these members of DCSE together with the excellence of other academicians and industrial experts who joined the team during the preparatory works on FIT is the main human capital for further growth and development of the new faculty. In accordance with the DCSE tradition, FIT will provide education and conduct research in basic disciplines of informatics. It will prepare experts for both industry and academic careers with skills and knowledge covering all levels of ICT system architectures.

In the academic year 2009/2010, FIT will start with four departments (Computer Science, Computer Systems, Digital Design, and Software Engineering) and with Bachelor study programme Informatics in the full-time form and in the Czech language. It has currently accredited 6 specializations: Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems and Management, Information Technology, Software Engineering, and Web and Multimedia. The expected enrollment into the freshmen year is 500 students. Research activities at FIT will focus on theoretical computer science, software and web engineering, parallel and distributed systems and mobile networks, computational intelligence and knowledge engineering, computer system security, and design of digital systems just to mention the most important domains of interest.

The roadmap of further development includes accreditation of the bachelor programme in English and in the part-time (or combined) form within the first year of its existence. Also, FIT plans to get accreditation for the Masters programme Informatics (with 4 specializations) and PhD programme Informatics within next two years. The total student population is expected to grow to the size of about 3000 students within next four years.
