Congress of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science and Technology 2019

Congress of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science and Technology 2019

On August 5–10, the International Congress of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science (CLMPST) is held at the Faculty of Information Technology. The sixteenth edition topic is “Bridging across academic cultures”. RNDr. Kateřina Trlifajová, Ph.D., also lectures on “Bernard Bolzano and the part-whole principle for infinite collections” at the “Bolzano’s Mathematics and the General Methodology of the Sciences” session which takes place on August 8 at the auditorium T9:107. FIT Students and employees have free entrance to lectures.

Topic

The topic of the 16th edition of the congress is “Bridging across academic cultures”. The communities and societies in both logic and philosophy/history of science are often fragmented and isolated from each other. The conference wants to contribute to redressing this state of things.

The theme refers to C. P. Snow’s 1959 Rede lecture “The Two Cultures” (celebrating its 60th anniversary in this year), but at the same time also to the highly relevant cultural differences between the various countries and regions around the globe. The congress desires to enrich the scientific dialogue by including the voices of those traditionally underrepresented in academic fields.

The congress fields are logic and philosophy of science and technology. All topics on these fields are on the agenda, from mathematical logic to metaphilosophy, from the foundations of the exact sciences to the philosophy of the social sciences, presented by researchers from all regions and cultures of the world.

Program

The CLMPST 2019 hosts three plenary lectures and over twenty invited lectures. It is also structured in twenty thematic sections. RNDr. Kateřina Trlifajová, Ph.D., is the chair of two of these sections. Moreover, she has a lecture at the “Bolzano’s Mathematics and the General Methodology of the Sciences” session called “Bernard Bolzano and the part-whole principle for infinite collections”. It takes place on August 8 at the auditorium T9:107.

About the Event

The International Congress of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science and Technology (CLMPST) is organised every four years on behalf of the Division of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science and Technology of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (DLMPST/IUHPST). Its president is Menachem Magidor.

The conference has a unique character, bringing together the communities of more than 800 logicians, philosophers of logic, and philosophers and historians of science and technology. Full participation in the conference assumes registration and payment of a conference fee. FIT Students and employees can attend lectures for free. All the necessary information is available on the conference website.

The congress is immediately followed by the Logic Colloquium—the European summer meeting of the Association for Symbolic Logic. It is held in the same conference venue on August 11–16, 2019.
