Open Data Laboratory

The Open Data Laboratory (OpenDataLab) is operated by the faculty in cooperation with Profinit EU (FIT Golden Partner). The primary goal is to offer ideas, help, and topics of term paper and theses to students in the field of open and linked data. New applications, analyses, and conclusions take form in the lab, and they make everyday life more comfortable. The laboratory is led by Ing. Jaroslav Kuchař, Ph.D.

The OpenDataLab is an open laboratory in partnership with Profinit EU. It is intended mainly for students, but after an agreement, other interested persons in open data may come. The main goal is to offer ideas, help, and topics of term papers and theses to students.

The laboratory primarily deals with the processing of available data. There is a large number of them, but their use lags. In the lab, new applications, analyses, and conclusions are created using this data to make everyday life easier. Therefore processing this data is an opportunity to economise or streamline existing processes and improve the lives of the population.

Research Activity

The lab gets involved in research on open and linked data. It also focuses on the efficient exploration of linked data space and data management in heterogeneous and dynamic environments. All this helps to solve practical challenges not only in these areas. At the same time, there is a demand for opening and linking other interesting data sources of public administration, which can be subsequently available to all in the National Open Data Catalogue.

An attractive direction is also the research on the use of knowledge graphs and bases not only for the enrichment of open data but also in the opposite direction. The increasing amount of open data from different areas can significantly enrich the knowledge base itself, which is used in many other applications.

The laboratory also deals with text processing tasks. For example, a large number of machine-readable documents are available in the contract register. It is possible to work on the document categorisation, to search for addresses, contact details, and identical parts in records in a comparable range to commercial applications.

Educational Activity

Students can try working with open data sources. They have a unique opportunity to explore data on transport services, state economic activities, environment, and many other areas, in the form of term papers and theses.

Not only students of the Web and Software Engineering branch but also others can get involved, for example within the Web Data Mining (MIE-DDW) and Semantic Web (MIE-SWE) courses. Currently solved projects can be viewed in GitHub repositories.
